Almost Finished. . .

I am amazed at how long Spin has taken me to quilt! I finished quilting last night. I used TWO SPOOLS of Aurifil 50 wt thread!! Holy wow, OK, to put that into perspective, this quilt now measures 62" x 62" . . . what did it start at you ask? 64" x 64". . . yup, the quilting shrunk this baby down a full 2 inches in both directions! I learned SOOOO much in quilting this quilt.  This quilt has more negative space than any of my other quilts. I used double batting, Quilter's Dream Wool and Select 100% Cotton. Double bat creates a few of its own challenges. . . I had to work really hard to keep the tucks at bay on this one.  You can see from this picture how much puff I was dealing with when quilting the negative space:

I am going to wash this and see how it comes out, I may block it if it doesn't come out of the wash square (and it is now square).  I'm going to try binding after the wash on this one.  I have never done that before but have read on several other blogs that this makes for a 'cleaner' less wrinkled binding. . . If it falls apart in the wash. . . well, I am going to cry. . . and say a lot of bad words! :) So here are a couple of pre-wash, pre-binding pictures.  Not a finish but almost.  I'll post more pictures and all of the things I learned quilting this baby in my next post, which will not be over a week away :) For the past week, I pretty much banned myself from all computer activity. I've done very little blog reading or commenting and obviously no posting. Yes, I'm going through some withdrawals LOL I'll shut up now, here are a few pics, I'll post a ton more when it is finished :)

Linking up with Lorna for Let's Bee Social, Lee for WIP Wednesdays and Kelly for NTT.

Until next time, keep on quilting! And remember, don't sweat the small stuff. . . and it is ALL small stuff :)

  1. Unless you Plan on trimming RHE edges if RHE quilt after washing and before binding, you might consider zig zagging the edges to help with fraying. I did this once without stitching edges and putting on binding was a nightmare!
    Looks awesome...as usual!

  4. I was also going to suggest zigzagging the edges. I've blocked before binding, but the quilt has always had stitching around the edge from being basted on the frame. Also, if you can soak your quilt in the machine instead of agitating it to death, it will help cut down on fraying. I don't have that option since I have a front loading machine, so instead I choose a gentle cycle. There is a little fraying, but not unmanageable.
P.S. I love how you chose to quilt your coloured triangles. The whole quilt looks great...well worth the two spools of thread and million hours of quilting!

  5. WOW! I love how you quilted it and how it shows up on the backing. I also suggest surging or zig zagging around the edges.

  10. Stupendous work, Judy! Love the texture, love the back (love that fabric ON the back!) Hadn't "seen" you around this week so I was imagining you hunched over, quilting away! Notice I didn't imagine you ripping, LOL! I love it, and I thought, much like Vicki, that you can probably quilt swirls with your eyes closed now!
