Short Update

I did not get much sewing done over the weekend. . . I did a little more quilting on my white background piece.  Original post on rulers and such here.  I have learned once again that quilting when I am tired is just not good - how many times do you suppose I need to be hit over the head with this before I just stop when I am tired?? . . . OK, probably a few more haha

See that wrinkle? I haven't decided if I am going to rip it out.  That entire block is very sketchy.  I knew as I was doing it I was totally not focusing and not taking the time to make sure the quilt was in the right place to ensure wrinkles and wobbly bobbly lines would not happen.  I might leave it in to remind me to just stop when I get tired. . . and this is going to be used as a background for taking pictures of blocks - I can hide that square haha  I also learned that I really do not like doing micro pebbles. . . or micro anything, I get bored and lose focus. Maybe bigger pebbles would be better. . .

And, I tried McTavishing for the first time.

Lastly, I made one more block for the fractured log cabin quilt.  I put a more contrasting fabric in this one after the light yellow middle square.  I think this one looks much better :)

Amazing how many wrinkles accumulate between the design wall and the patio table!!

Here's the picture of the other one, so you can see there really is a difference in the way the blocks look with that one different strip of material :)

I'm also contemplating mixing this up a bit. . . Of course I am haha I think I might use different blocks between these fractured blocks. . . Not sure, I think I need to make all of the fractured blocks and then do one of the other that I am contemplating to see how it looks in real life.  Looks cool in EQ7. . . we'll see :) Stay tuned, I'm hoping to get the log cabin blocks done today.  Then I'll make a few of the others, take a picture and see what you all think!

  1. Your background piece is looking very cool. Did you say in a previous post that you used rulers? How do they work? Do you trace, or do you actually hug the ruler with the machine's foot?

  2. Thanks for showing your free motion quilting and even the "tuck". It's important we see eachother's flaws (I was going to give a profound reason but can't think what that is right now)-- it helps me be able to press forward without feeling despondent, despite my own flaws I guess. Also, I often pick out things but on occassion find myself feeling obstinate and leave it in. Also, I think of a mentor who told me that every quilt must contain a mistake whether on purpose or not. So far I've not had to add one on purpose. I like your reason also, as a reminder of a lesson! Did you take a class? I keep learning mostly on my own, looking at tutorials and figuring things out-- but I do find extra value when I take a class. Also, I know what you mean about sewing when tired!

  3. I got a few tucks too quilting over the weekend - terrible as I could see them forming! I'm going to rip out 3 and leave 2!

  4. You know it's time to quit when you are so tired that you stop caring about little details like tucks and wrinkles! I've reached that point a couple of times lately and pushed on...only to have to pick out my work. But do I learn??? Nope. I like your fractured blocks, especially the second photo - something about the zippy zig-zaggedy fabric really appeals to me.

  5. I really like the textured piece you are going to use as a background. It will be so good as a reference to designs you can use to fill spaces. May have to put this on my list.

  6. I love the way your white piece is turning out. I want to do something similar, but I would do placemats instead of 4" squares. You know how I like big things. :)

  10. I like the second picture (your first block?) best. Yellow and orange, excellent colors. This will be one sunshine-y quilt. :)

  11. My goodness, that's some awesome quilting there! I would wait to the end to see if you still feel like unpicking that tuck in the quilting ... chances are you'll be fine with it :) There is a great linky party called "I Quilt" over at Pretty Bobbins on Thursdays - I'm sure Gemma would love you to link up your quilting adventures an progress :)

  12. Your machine quilting is exquisite, I'm in awe! Will direct my friend Joannie to your site, since she is a machine quilter. I also really like your fractured log cabin blocks. So cheerful in the yellow.
